  READINGS : Isaiah 45: 1-6                Thess 1:1-5

   GOSPEL.  :       Matt 22:1-1

William Barclay, who produced a DailyStudy Bible on the Gospel of Matthew, makes a point about the place of material possessions from an earlier saying of Jesus about no person being able to be the slave to two masters. Is this behind the seemingly innocent question , asked in all politeness? “Tell us, is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor , or not?”There are a couple of principles at stake here.

  1. What things belong to God?
  2. Are people more or less important than rules?
